Meet the Crew

Variously English, American or Australian - we're quite the international potpourri! For each of us, sailing is a central part of our lives, a deliberately chosen path away from the mainstream. We love it and we love to share it with others too. (And perhaps we can entice a few more folks away from the "rat-race" and add more notches to our mast...:>)

Skipper Di

skipper DiAlso known by those who sail in her Aegean realm as "The Goddess Diana," or "Mother Hen"! After completing a degree in Psychology at Sussex University (UK), she spent her early years vascillating between boat-bumming and the software industry. An increasing gathering of potential sailors wanting to join her trips to Greece inspired her to take the plunge and buy our first boat "Vassilis" - and so SeaScape was born!

Her long-held belief in a down-to-earth, "no-glossy-brochure-speak" approach came into it's own even more with the advent of the internet and mobile communications. With the dubious honour of being amongst the first to purchase a cellphone modem in Greece (getting it working was another matter!) - she finally realised her vision of being able to communicate directly and personally with potential sailors - straight from the boat(s) to your home/office.

Whenever she's not actually at the helm of her first "baby", Vassilis - she can usually be found attached at the hip to her laptop, still eternally online.

Greece and Turkey are now well-established, but Diane's itchy-feet syndrome hasn't abated she continues to head up new sailing explorations - our new 55' catamaran in Thailand being the latest cool addition to our SeaScape family.

Captain Ray

Captain Ray

One of our engineers-run-away-to-sea; or perhaps he is regressing, as he started his teenage years as a marine engineer trainee. From the age of 12, he was sailing on clinker built cutters and whalers in the UK; shortly afterwards, heading across the oceans as an engineer on super-tankers. A varied career has followed, including skippering flotillas for a certain well-known competitor, leading groups of young people on volunteer missions overseas... and his most recent "real world job", working in a team developing new technology lasers for eye surgery in Australia.

As our technical manager, Ray is responsible for all our little fleet; ie, if it doesn't work, it's his problem! When asked to write some of his own bio, he claims that he is a "quiet and insular character who likes to get to bed early; not keen on socialising but will do so when necessary". If you sail on his boat, you'll soon learn not to take a single word he says seriously...

Skipper Ben

yacht skipper Ben

Aka, Captain Kid! Young he may be, but our Skipper Ben has more sea-miles and sailing adventures under his belt than many of us dream of in a lifetime. Unlike the rest of us, he didn't need to hop between different jobs before he knew where his heart and career lay. In the past 7 years, Ben has worked on board yachts in Australia & New Zealand, the Caribbean, done the obligatory transatlantic, and the less common Panama Canal.

Before joining our little team, Ben had already spent 4 seasons in Greece and has developed a very misleading knack of making it look dead easy to park a 55' yacht in a space the size of a canoe. (Note to non-sailors: tweaking sails is the easy bit. Parking is where the fun begins... :>)

Besides sailing, Ben also teaches a number of other adventure sports, both on the land and the sea.

Skipper Eugene

yacht skipper Eugene

A new addition to our pot-pourri of crew - we are very happy to add a touch of French panache to our team! Another runaway from the so-called real world, Eugene sailed his way through the corporate world for 10 years until he did the Virtual Vendee Globe, and started to ponder ways to make it real.

From setting course and sail trim sitting in front of a computer, he set out to turn his dream into reality. From suit-and-tie land to MCA Master of Yachts, he graduated at record speed to real life skippering and took to it like a duck to water! He brings with him an especial passion for celestial navigation (BYO sextant, lessons provided free!).

The best bit of all ? As one would expect from a Frenchman, his cooking exceeds even his sailing.... :)

Skipper / Web Wizard Rob

Skipper Rob

Another escapee to Peter Pan Land... Skipper Rob stowed his law degree in the cupboard, and took off for a double-handed transatlantic at 22. For some masochistic reason, he got involved in the Fastnet races, until he saw the error of his ways and started sailing where it's warm n' sunny! An attempt at returning to London suit-and-tie land lasted a short while, but the call of the sea kept enticing him away to various sailing instructor/skipper roles around the world.

Staunch devotee of The Cricket and Proper Queen's English, Old Chap! - Rob was also our finest bacon-and-eggs chef (even after a night defending his position as reigning Flaming Lamberghini Champion at the infamous Savana Bar!).

Mr "I'll-always-be-free-n-single" Rob fell like he was pole-axed on meeting SeaScape sailor Amber; after 4 years of skippering, Rob is now blissfully wed in sunny CA and developing his own web design company. Yes, this site is all Rob's creation! However, we're keeping him in our Rogues Gallery not only cos he's still our resident geek advisor, but we're sure one day we'll entice him and Amber back out here again...

Judy

Judy Another of our team who had enough of the 9-to-5, she retired from her life as a telecommunications manager several years ago, and now has much more time to spend on one of her main passions in life - travel !

It was the travel bug which brought her out to Greece 13yrs ago, to join one of our shareboat trips; since then, she and her husband have enticed several boatloads of other friends to return and sail with us.

As she was doing such a great job for us anyway! - we enticed Judy to come join us "officially". So now part of the SeaScape Team too, Judy is the person you'll talk to if you call our US office; she'll happily share her many travel experiences around the Greek isles, Turkey, Thailand and Malaysia.

Aussie Rob

Diane Tonga Sm

Our Australian accountant and business manager, keeps us afloat financially. Not your ordinary accountant, Robert sold out of his high-pressure city partnership some years ago, preferring a more balanced life of private practice and spending as much time as possible afloat - whether on his own yacht in Sydney, or heading up other SeaScape trips DownUnder.

His other passion in life is the piano; Mr Cool Entertainer has been known to amaze our sailboat neighbours many a time by setting up a mobile "Piano Bar" actually on board! Have Piano, Will Travel - not a bad motto. Teaching non-aussies how to say "G'day Mate!" properly is another of his hobbies...

Besides running the SeaScape finances, Robert also looks after our Sydney base; so if you are also DownUnder, you can call up and talk to him directly about our trips.
