Gocek is a friendly, pretty little town, and one of its main attractions is that no-one hassles you to buy anything as you walk along the street (unlike the bigger towns!) It is developing a reputation as the "upmarket" place to be, the locals actively discourage all the package-tour operators from moving in. Rumour has it that it is being quietly adopted by some of the rich n' famous as one of their get-away-from-it-all hideaways; this past summer, several shopkeepers were just totally delighted and proud to show us their photos of some very well-known personalities who had patronised their establishments recently!
A very fun place for the evening is a traditional sit-on-the-floor taverna that we often frequent. . .well, not quite on the floor, piles of cushions and carpets offer some padding for one's rear! They sometimes bring out the "hookah" (water pipe) at the end, and encourage people to try one more traditional Turkish custom. Inspired by this local ambiance, we've often been known to try out our best attempts at belly-dancing here too, in the wee small hours. . .
