Kastellorizon

Literally only 3 miles off the Turkish coast, Kastellorizon is still so totally Greek, it feels like we've sailed for hours to get to a new country!

Guess the people of Kastellorizon and the Turkish mainland haven't heard that Turks and Greeks aren't supposed to like each other—'cos they certainly don't seem to have any problems! There are actually many family connections between this island and the nearby Turkish towns of Kalkan and Kas. The Turks provided much support to their resistance movement during WW2, and the people of Kastellorizon still hop (illegally!) across the water frequently to go shopping in Kalkan. . .

It's a very quiet little island; though it used to have a population in the 10,000 range, it's now down to around 600. Many of the younger people have gone off to Athens or overseas to find work; there's not a great deal to do on the island, apart from the traditional Greek pastime—sit in a taverna, play backgammon and watch the world go by!
